A Will is the fundamental unit of consciousness, identity, and matter — the irreducible core of what makes a conscious being uniquely itself. Everything Agenticism says about choice starts here.
Agentic behavior vs. agency
It's worth holding two terms apart carefully. Agentic behavior is a fundamental characteristic of the Will — property six, above. Agency, by contrast, is an emergent property built on top of agentic behavior, addressed elsewhere in the framework. The rough analogy: agentic behavior is like a directional force; agency is the work accomplished in the direction of that force. The Will, on its own, is the foundation — not yet the whole building.
The Six Properties
Eternality
A Will is neither created nor capable of destruction; it is self-existent. It cannot be assembled from prior parts — if it could, its identity would trace to the builder, not to itself. Only a self-existent entity can be the ultimate author of its own choices.
Indivisibility
A Will cannot be separated into lower-level parts analyzable on their own. It is the smallest unit into which matter can be divided, and it functions as a unified whole. This is what blocks the materialist move of reducing mind to the behavior of its parts.
Opacity
Whatever inner process produces a Will's output is hidden and unknowable from any external viewpoint — not because our instruments are too crude, but as an essential feature. Opacity, together with indivisibility, halts the reductive regress (choice → neural network → neurons → electrochemistry) at the level of the Will itself.
Reception of Law
A Will is not a closed system emitting output from nowhere. It is an open-loop system that receives an input of law — a directive of how to behave — and responds to it. This is what makes a Will's output a response rather than either a spontaneous emission or a rigidly determined result.
Unique Behavioral Signature
Each Will has a distinctive range of response that distinguishes it from every other Will — consistent without being perfectly predictable, the way a personality is recognizable without being scriptable. This uniqueness is essential to identity, and it's also the engine behind statistical emergence: aggregation only produces regularity because individual deviations point in different directions.
Agentic Output
The Will's output is neither deterministic nor random — it is agentic, of one's own volition. This is the load-bearing claim of the whole framework. Deterministic output would make choice an illusion; purely random output would leave no one in control. Agentic output flows from the Will's own nature.
